ICCS: Changi Beach Recce,
Ng Hua Qin, 29th July 2004

Changi Beach Park is divided into two areas:
1) Changi Point Beach (Changi Beach)
2) Changi Ferry Beach (Changi Beach Extension)
This report is from a recce on 29 July 2004, 11am+, during a relatively high tide.

1) Changi Point Beach (Changi Beach)

Location: This beach stretches from Changi Village to SAF Ferry Terminal. (See Map A)
Trash Load: Moderately low
Number of Volunteers: 50
Shelters: Toilets,
rain shelter
Access: From Paku Road or from Nicoll Drive

Review: Trash load for this portion of Changi beach is low probably to frequently cleaning by contractors using bulldozer-type machine. Even so, a clean-up done by SAJC on the day of the recce yields around 20 bags of trash. Trash picked up by them was mainly cigarette butts, styrofoam and bags. Site is easily accessible by Paku Road or Nicoll Drive. Mangrove strandline requires more recce during low tide to identify trash load since this recce was conducted during high-tide.

Trash collected can be placed neatly beside any of the numerous rubbish bin along the jogging/cycling track. Off-loading of students can be done at the various carparks depending on the number of buses.

2) Changi Ferry Beach (Changi Beach Extension)

Location: This beach stretches from SAF Ferry Terminal to Changi Ferry Terminal. (See Map B)
Trash Load: Moderately high
Number of Volunteers: 200 or so.
Shelters: Toilets,
rain shelter, changing rooms.
Access: From Nicoll Drive.

Review: Trash load for this beach is high. The stretch of beach is very long and dirty. Analysis of the strandline reveals glass bottles, plastics bags and barrels.

Trash collected can be placed neatly beside any of the numerous rubbish bin along the jogging/cycling track. Trash can be brought to Bin Centre too.

Site is easily accessible by Nicoll Drive. Off-loading of students can be done at the Carpark 6 or 7 depending on the work site. Since getting from one end to the other will take some time. Carpark 6 is significantly smaller and is almost always full (due to free parking info from taxi driver taking a snooze there). Carpark 7 is a lot bigger and can allow more than 2 coaches at the same time.

Students that required constant supervision (e.g. primary schools) should be grouped together with older participants due to the long stretch of the beach.
